The Ramblin’ Bauers are on the road again! We’ve been making our way up the east coast towards the New England states, but there have been a few stops along the way. So sit back, buckle your seatbelt, and enjoy the ride as we tell you about our time in Cape May, NJ, and Philadelphia, PA!
Cape May was once a highly desirable beach getaway for the rich and influential. There are fancy lodges and beach resorts, of course, but that’s not what drew us there. It wasn’t the beach, the light house, or the World War II bunker either. The reason that we went to Cape May was for the plethora of Victorian era houses. If you remember our trip to Edenton, NC, then you will remember that I love old houses. Victorian are my favorite! Bilbo and I spent the day walking the streets, admiring street after street of beautiful architecture.
Don’t be terribly disappointed in us, now! We did take a quick stroll along the beach and stopped at the Rusty Nail for lunch. The Rust Nail is a beachfront open air bar and grille where Bilbo enjoyed a fish taco and I had a crab cake sandwich.
Then we went to the state park in Cape May where a lighthouse can be found, as well as a bunker from World War II. The shore is beautiful, but the bunker is absolutely hideous!
We didn’t stay long because the beach was very hot and the breeze was nonexistent. Besides, we had just spent almost a month beach hopping and were ready to move on to site-seeing. So we got some ice cream and headed on to our campsite at Belleplain State Forest in Woodbine, NJ. It is very conveniently situated between Cape May and Philadelphia, which happened to be our next destination. At the park we stayed in a lean-to. It is basically a four-walled structure with a hard wooden floor. With the nightly thunderstorms during our stay, we were very glad that we spent the few extra dollars!
Stay tuned for our trip to Philadelphia! We had a whirlwind trip with some very pleasant surprises. I think you’ll enjoy it!
